Why Alberta, and why now
Alberta is one of the few places on earth worth crossing an ocean for if you make your living from beef genetics. This November, a small group of breeders will be there with us — and there is still time to join them.
Why Alberta, and why now
If you make your living from beef genetics, there are a handful of places worth crossing an ocean for. Alberta, in western Canada, is one of them. It is Canada’s largest beef-producing province, home to more than 40% of the national cattle herd, supported by over 28,000 cattle producers — one of the most advanced beef industries anywhere in the world.
The scale is real. Canada runs about 11 million head of cattle, a cattle sector worth some CAD 29 billion, and around CAD 5 billion in beef exports every year, reaching more than 190 countries on a reputation built on food safety, traceability and quality. When people talk about “premium beef genetics,” this is one of the places they mean.

Seeing the genetics up close, on the ranches that produce it, is worth far more than reading a catalogue.
Farmfair International: fifty years in one weekend
The reason to be in Alberta this particular November is Farmfair International, in Edmonton. Founded in 1974, Farmfair has spent more than five decades connecting breeders, producers, buyers and industry leaders — a genuine international meeting place for the global beef industry.

What happens there in four days is hard to match:
- Elite genetics on show. National breed shows with over 270 ranches represented and a prize purse of more than CAD 300,000, judged by experts, culminating in the bull and female championships.
- More than 40,000 visitors each year, including international buyers, trade commissioners and breed associations from around the world.
- Business that starts on the show floor. Farmfair’s International AgBusiness Centre connects visiting buyers with Canadian genetics partners and embryo and semen export programs.

In 2026 the weekend carries an extra dimension: Argentina is Farmfair’s Feature Country, which brings an international delegation and a global flavour to the week.
The Farmfair Lightning Tour: nine days, the essential Alberta
Laurik International — Farmfair’s official mission partner — has built a short, focused programme for the breeder who cannot spare two weeks but does not want to miss what matters. The Farmfair Lightning Tour runs 5 to 13 November 2026, from Edmonton to Calgary.

Four days inside Farmfair are followed by five days of private visits to seven of Alberta’s leading seedstock operations, each hosted by the family that breeds the cattle, plus a full day at AgriTrade, western Canada’s principal equipment and technology expo.
The operations we visit are not names from a brochure:
- Miller Wilson Angus (Bashaw) — the world-renowned “DMM” prefix, Black and Red Angus sought after by producers around the world.
- Belvin Angus (Innisfail) — around 400 registered Angus females, three generations of the Hamilton family.
- Hamilton Farms (Cochrane) — one of Canada’s premier Black Angus operations, 350 mother cows in the foothills northwest of Calgary.
- Ter-Ron Farms (Forestburg) — third-generation Red Angus, a legacy dating back to 1946.
- Harvie Ranching (Olds) — elite Polled Hereford and Charolais.
- MJT Cattle Co. (Edgerton) — 80 years of Angus, Hereford and Charolais.
- Lakeland College (Vermilion) — home to Canada’s only fully student-managed farm.
The group is limited to ten people, with English–Spanish coordination from arrival to departure. Small on purpose: the conversations at the rail are the whole point.

Who this is for
This is a tour for the working breeder and the serious cattleman — the person who wants to understand Canadian genetics well enough to buy with confidence, to build relationships that outlast the trip, and to see how one of the world’s leading beef industries operates on its own ground. It is equally a tour for a couple: the show, the ranches and the Canadian Rockies make for a journey worth sharing.
Ten places. Booking closes 6 October 2026. If Alberta has been on your list, this is the year, and this is the way to see it.
